Poisoning in Birds
Many household items or plants can be toxic to your bird. Here are some of the common causes of poisoning in birds.
Ingesting lead in substances like lead paint causes lead poisoning, or inhaling car exhaust fumes. It results in signs such as vomiting or blood in the droppings, and also neurological signs like loss of balance and convulsions. Mild cases are treatable.
Drug poisoning can result from overdosage. Make sure you understand the instructions for drugs like antibiotics, and use directions for disinfectants and other chemicals.
Ingesting zinc in galvanised wire mesh causes zinc poisoning. It causes signs like lead poisoning.
Plants can contain chemicals poisonous to birds. This includes oleander, nightshade, eggplant, avocado and Angel’s Trumpet. There are many others.
Seed contamination may be a problem, especially with mould, so only buy seed from reputable commercial birdseed outlets.
Cooking fumes from Teflon-coated cooking pans and utensils are poisonous, and other cooking fumes can be dangerous, so do not house your bird in the kitchen.
Treated timber may contain arsenic.
